Driving Essaouira, explained.
Essaouira sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, 175 km west of Marrakech. The drive from Marrakech takes 2.5-3 hours on the N8 — well-paved, scenic, with stops at argan oil cooperatives and the famous tree-climbing goats around Ounagha.
Inside Essaouira's Medina walls, cars don't go. Park outside Bab Doukkala or Bab Marrakech (around 30 dirhams per day) and walk in. The blue-and-white old town is small and walkable.
South of Essaouira, the coast is wild and quiet. Sidi Kaouki (25 km, kitesurf paradise), Cap Sim (15 km, sunsets), and the empty beach at Tafelney (40 km, dunes). Diabat, just south of town, has the ruins of an old palace and was Jimi Hendrix's hangout in '69.
Local tip
Park at the public lot outside Bab Marrakech (the gate facing the Marrakech road) — 30 dirhams overnight, secure, and a 5-minute walk into the heart of the Medina.

Yes — we deliver to any riad in Essaouira's Medina at no extra cost. Since cars don't enter the Medina alleys, we meet you at the closest gate (Bab Doukkala, Bab Marrakech, or Bab Sbaa) with the car ready. Just send us your riad name when booking.
Can I bring my kitesurf gear?
Yes — most travelers do. Tell us your gear count when booking and we attach a free roof rack. Wet wetsuits and salty boards in the back? No judgment, that's normal Essaouira life.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Essaouira?
2.5 to 3 hours on the N8 — well-paved, two-lane scenic road. Perfect day-trip distance, but most travelers stay at least 2-3 nights to enjoy the slower Essaouira pace.
Is Essaouira safe to drive in?
Yes. Outside the Medina, normal coastal-town traffic. Inside the Medina — cars don't go. The N8 to and from Marrakech is well-maintained. Watch for occasional slow trucks on the long stretches and goats crossing near Ounagha.
Can I drop the car at Essaouira airport (ESU)?
Yes — same price, same service. Free drop-off at Essaouira-Mogador airport any hour, day or night. Or drop in the Medina, at your hotel, or back in Agadir or Marrakech if your trip continues. Just tell us where when booking.
